Joe Manchin was born in Farmington, West Virginia, the United States on August 24, 1947. He was the second child to be to john and Mary O. Manchin. His father was the mayor of Farmington. Additionally, he operated a carpet and furniture store. In 1965, he graduated from Farmington High School with a diploma in high school. He subsequently attended West Virginia University on a football scholarship. In 1970, he graduated from college with a degree in business administration.
